Our Mental Health

People come in all different shells, templates and forms. None of which can help determine if mental illness is being challenged or at risk.  People have learned to how to cope, maneuver and get by with whatever state of mind they might be in.

Mental health is a serious topic, but yet still continues to be taken lightly.  RCR! Presents Real Discussions discussed this topic with two experienced therapists within the mental health industry.

Erica Strayhorn James of EJ Counseling and Nathalie Ellis of Esteem Counseling Services were very knowledgeable about the different types and forms of mental illness.  What I found to be interesting is that they have clients that are young as 3 years old. The ladies had several examples that they shared to help enlighten us about what mental health is really all about.

A few things that are helpful in dealing with mental illness is journaling daily. This will help in expressing what the person is feeling and dealing with.
Equipping people with information and educating the person about their choices, outlets and strategies are a good practice. Lastly, just practicing self care routines everyday will also help combat in battling mental illness.

It’s also helpful to involve loved ones in the educational process. Like any other illness, getting love and support will help manage any situation better.

Keep in mind that individuals can get to see a therapist just like seeing a primary care physician.  Don’t struggle to get mental wellness on your own.

The Many Phases of Cancer

The Many Phases of Cancer.

We have the audacity to think that when people have cancer, they should begin to look a certain way. Especially when they have stage 4 cancer. We have a lot of nerve.

Nickole Justice and Deborah Huddleston don’t look sick at all. They are two beautiful women, they are mothers and they are dealing with stage 4 cancer.

Neither one of the women knew that they had cancer. They weren’t feeling well and went to the doctor. For Nickole, they told her that she was too young to have cancer. Therefore, the opportunity to diagnose her cancer early and catch it was missed. Deborah had been running her own business, took care of many and carried on her day to day routine. She too wasn’t feeling well one day and decided to go and get checked out.

You can only imagine that this was life changing for both women. Their jobs. Their careers. Their families impacted. These ladies don’t have time to be scared because they are in a fight for their lives every day.

Healthcare that’s afforded to them is not enough and it’s a constant battle to acquire and maintain coverage.  Their families have stepped in to help provide the support they need. And yet they still fight. They won’t quit. They want to live.

Despite everything that was thrown at them, they were winning until we lost one of them.  On Sunday, June 10, 2018, we lost Nickole Justice to stage 4 cancer. She leaves behind her 10-year daughter nicknamed Nurse Peaches, her parents, family, and friends. It was my honor to meet her and have her and Deborah on RCR! Presents Real Discussions on Sunday, May 20th.   We extend our prayer and condolences to her family and we’re so thankful to have met her.

Thank you Nickole for sharing your battle with us, it will be used to help others.

Health and Wellness

RCR! Presents Blog Image Ep. 59.png

Health and Wellness are 2 words, we like to see go hand and hand. Especially, when it’s the beginning of a new year.

We are becoming more and more aware of our food options and choices. The pesticides and steroids that are placed on and in our foods are unacceptable.

Chef Jamel Thompson and Jackie and Janae Madison were very passionate about what we eat, how it’s prepared, the portions and making sure we exercise.

Chef Jamel brings a vast amount of information to the discussion.  He studied and received his degree
His vegan food leaves your mouth wanting for more as the taste is incredible.

Jackie and Janae Madison is a mother and daughter combination that enjoys exercising and stay well together. The 6-year-old Janae holds her Mom accountable by making sure they exercise every day together. Jackie coaches people to eat appropriate portions. Both Jackie and Jamel would agree that if you’re going to eat meat, make sure it’s a good cut and the right portion. Don’t overdo it.

Both these professionals can now offer help on what and how to eat. Most people would agree that all the exercising will be without value without the proper diet and food portions to go with it. Everyone one is different, so govern yourselves accordingly.

Here’s to wishing you and yours nothing but health and wellness in 2018 and the years to come

The Importance of Self Care

RCR! Presents Episode 50

The Importance of Self Care…

It sounds so simple, but yet overlooked.  Often times, we get up and go without taking enough time to ensure that we’re applying the proper self-care for ourselves.  We need to be able to ensure that the necessary steps are taken in order to keep ourselves strengthen on a daily basis.

As people of color, our day to day struggles, opportunities and/or challenges can tend to be different than what other races and cultures might be faced with.  It’s unfortunate, however, very real.  Our thoughts consist of dealing with micro aggression in the workplace, chronic stress and climate changes and challenges within the current society.  We are a resilient people, however, we still need to provide self-care.  It could be as small as eating more vegetables, taking breaks throughout the day to stretch more or going to be early.  These are just a few small, simple and yet significant ones that can be incorporated.

The SisterCARE Alliance is designed to give people (both men and women) the tools needed to begin a self-care regimen and lifestyle.  The majority of the recipients are women, however, men have been on board and supportive as well.  Anana Harris Parris, Founder of Sister Alliance spoke of this vision as she was going through her own discovery in need of self-care.  The self-care guide titled 'Self-Care Matters – A Revolutionary’s Approach' helps individuals address and undercover all areas that are needed.  By taking one step at a time, having someone hold you accountable and seeing your growth from one week to the next is what it’s all about.  The goal is for individuals to adapt to a self-care revolution; owning what they need and being able to identify those critical needs on a daily basis.

For more information about obtaining a self-care revolutionary life, go to www.sisterCareAlliance.org or send an email to sistercarealliance@gmail.com.

How to Deal with Mental Health

RCR! Presents Episode #49

Often times when people seem a little bit off, depressed or having trouble functioning we render solutions of prayer, keep it moving and the proverbial - You'll be alright.

We look at individuals that have some form of mental challenges and say that they don't look like they're struggling but they are.  Mental Health Challenges do not come from people seeking attention, but it stems from different forms of mental issues.  Mental Issues is any disease of the mind; the psychological state of someone who has emotional or behavioral problems serious enough to require psychiatric intervention and/or medication (e.g. Bipolar, ADHD, Depression)

This something not to make fun of or make light of the situation.  It's important that we are honest with ourselves and with anyone we may know that might be struggling with their mental health.  Once the ice is broken and a detection of someone's mental health is in the balance, offer to them some suggestions to seek getting proper help.  It can begin by attending a group that helps individuals identify and deal with it.  Or it could require a more private one on one setting by seeing doctors that specialize in behavioral health, individual counselling or therapy.  Be honest with ourselves and with anyone we may know that might be struggling with their mental health.

It's amazing when families and friends can't be honest and supportive when then can see that something is "not quite right" with someone they are close with.  Having this type of support system is so vitally important in helping individuals persue getting the help that's needed.  Another helpful antidote is proper diet, rest, meditation, deep breathing, tool bag and propoer/positive surroundings.  This tends to help individuals embrace normality as typically certain triggers can tend to set them off.  Pursue getting the help that's needed.

Be careful of how you respond to medication.  Monitor how you and/or individuals respond to it.  Also, exercise your right to getting the right support.  If one therapist or doctor is not a good fit, then find another.

This is can be a big issue to address so take it one step at a time.  If you know of anyone that might need help in dealing with Mental Health Challenges, here are some people/places to connect with that can provide some assistance...

Erica James Counselling
SisterCARE Alliance
National Association for Mental Illness
Psychology Today (Find a Therapist)
Peer Support and Wellness Center
The Respect Institute

Remember to....

Invest in your health and wellness.
Exercise your right to shop around in getting the proper care and fit that you need.
Don't let anything stop you from living your life.  Mental Health can at times might slow you down, but don't let it stop you.down but don't let it stop you.

Own your right to be healthy!
