House In The Park #14

House In The Park #14

Real Chicks Rock! Presents Real Discussions spent some time talking with House In The Park Founder – Ramon Rawsoul. Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, he had no idea his life would change for him.

Moving to the suburbs of Chicago and then to Atlanta for college, he started to meet people that were a part of the underground scene. Encountering some of Atlanta’s influential DJs during that time, he caught the bug and wanted to start his own party. That’s when The Gathering came about and during the same year House In the Park was birthed.

House In The Park started off with 8 DJs (all of Ramon’s Friends), then the following year it was 6 scheduled (5 played as one couldn’t make it). Then it became just the iconic 4 DJs that you see today - Salah Ananse, DJ Kemit, Ramon Rawsoul and Kai Alce. This order has not changed in years even though the park location has. Moving from Candler Park to Perkerson Park to Grant Park speaks to how much this event has grown over the years. So much so, that it’s considered a festival. The other game changer is that this is the 1st year that it will be charging people to attend (kids under 10 are free).

It’s usually a great day in the park, rain or shine. The music. The people. The Love that’s in the air. The Dancing. It all does something to each person that’s in attendance. Whether you like house music or not, it’s typically about some feel good music being played. If you’re in the Atlanta area, not let Labor Day Sunday pass you by and you not be a part of one of the fun festivals in the city. I’ll be there dancing and I hope to see you there as well.

A Conversation with DJ Jazzy Joyce

Often times when we think "Legend" in the music, artist and DJ realm, we typically focus on men. However, this individual is an exception to the rule. It was my honor to sit down and have a conversation with DJ Jazzy Joyce.

Hailing from The Bronx (my hometown), this phenomenal woman has been in the game of DJing since she was a little girl. So, young that her mom had to take her to parties/events.

Hip Hop is her steelo, but she has never limited herself to just that. She has allowed the music to take her and the audience wherever they want to go and thus a good time is had by all. Joyce shared her experiences with that has spanned over 40 years. Never tired of growing and staying relevant, she keeps her eyes and ears open as to how music has changed. She throws no shade as she understands it all.

She lets us know that it's all about expression and being able to be free to express yourself is essential. Not only a DJ, but an artist as well, she paints and designs her own clothing line. Pieces that need to be hung in a gallery and/or museum. Let's not take for granted this one as she's still here willing to ROCK the party & part some wisdom for those that want to hear it.

A Closer Look Into Fusicology...

Topic: A Closer Look at Fusicology

Asya Shein is a dynamo! She has been around the music industry for over 20 years and has met and/or worked with several different artists.

Starting out as a dancer and then managing different artists, let's us know how interesting her journey has been. Her key contribution has been Fusicology which has become a one stop shop for all information for concerts, shows, and events for Neo Soul, Soul, Hip Hop & House all over the country.

Providing a free online tool that can be used to share and promote information about events, concerts and shows have been an excellent alternative to online ticketing systems. Again, it's free and can you can't purchase any tickets through Fusicology but you'll be informed as to what's going on you in your city.

After celebrating its 15 year this year, there is no indication of it stopping or slowing down any time soon.

The Gospel According to Jessica Care Moore

Some people are good at doing some things and then there are some that are great at doing almost everything they put their hands on. This dynamo lady that hails from Detroit, Michigan is no different. Jessica Care Moore can almost do it all. Well, whatever she puts her mind, heart and hands to do she does well.

What’s Life Like Living with Lupus?

RCR! Presents Blog Image (Living with Lupus Episode).png

Often times we think about Cancer and Diabetes as diseases that impact us the most.  Well, we shouldn’t disregard the power that Lupus has on the individuals it tries to attack.

RCR! Presents Real Discussions talked about What’s Life Like Living with Lupus with two women who refuse to lose.  They are not just survivors, but winners.  My guests Joelle May and Adrienne Allende have decided they would not lose in the daily battle with Lupus.  These ladies have decided to win each new day that they’re given. Yes, it’s like that! It’s a daily decision to want to beat it and not give in to how you might be feeling.

The interesting thing about this is that both of these women were diagnosed with Lupus at different times in their lives not knowing that they had anything wrong with them to begin with.

It has changed them both immensely where some of things that wanted to do and/or used to do can no longer be considered an option. Having children, relationships, careers, etc. are we’re tough decisions that had to made in order to focus on their health each and everyday.

Lupus is a complicated and unpredictable disease. You don’t know when symptoms will strike or how long a flare could last. The uncertainty of how you can be impacted will very from day to day and throughout the course of the day.  To make a donation to the local chapters, go Lupus.org.

Feel free to learn more about Lupus and the women who have decided to fight everyday on the Real Chicks Rock! YouTube channel.

Special Edition - A Conversation with Josh Milan

RCR! Presents Blog Image Josh Milan.png

What can you say about someone who can do it all?

RCR! Presents Real Discussions was honored to have A Conversation with Josh Milan.  He was transparent about his love, likes and some struggles with music.  His struggle: He wanted to become a musician...YES. However, wanting to be a singer...NO.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Josh shared with us some key things that helped to mold him into the man we see and hear today.  From his influential cousin to a business turned friendship he still has to this day with a musical icon.

He’s very good at what he does and is committed to it. As he continues to love the power of writing music, we will continue to hear beautiful lyrics and melodies from this gentleman from his label HoneyComb music.

The Power of Small Business

RCR! Presents Blog Image .png

Running and managing anything is never a small feet so when you have to manage a business, you really have your hands full.  As a small business owner myself, I tend to feel the difficulties of managing every and yet still come out in the black. I haven’t mastered that yet but it’s a goal I’ve never lost sight of.

The Power of Small Businesses was the topic as we’ve had some creative, self motivated women entrepreneurs that are clear on how to stay successful in the market place. They both offer unique services and produces which keeps their customers coming back.

Nikki Porcher and Shannon Evans are two vibrant business owners who are making their way here in Atlanta.  Shannon owning an event space and restaurant and Nikki providing Black women an outlet to promote their own business and products. While other women look to buy from them. It’s collaborative economics at it’s best.

Their message to the masses is not to be discouraged about any obstacles but to keep going. They want people to think out of the box, know and believe that it’s possible. Write it down in a business plan and be comfortable in changing/updating it when needed.

For more about their stories, feel free to check the show out on the Real Chicks Rock! Channel on YouTube.

Our Mental Health

People come in all different shells, templates and forms. None of which can help determine if mental illness is being challenged or at risk.  People have learned to how to cope, maneuver and get by with whatever state of mind they might be in.

Mental health is a serious topic, but yet still continues to be taken lightly.  RCR! Presents Real Discussions discussed this topic with two experienced therapists within the mental health industry.

Erica Strayhorn James of EJ Counseling and Nathalie Ellis of Esteem Counseling Services were very knowledgeable about the different types and forms of mental illness.  What I found to be interesting is that they have clients that are young as 3 years old. The ladies had several examples that they shared to help enlighten us about what mental health is really all about.

A few things that are helpful in dealing with mental illness is journaling daily. This will help in expressing what the person is feeling and dealing with.
Equipping people with information and educating the person about their choices, outlets and strategies are a good practice. Lastly, just practicing self care routines everyday will also help combat in battling mental illness.

It’s also helpful to involve loved ones in the educational process. Like any other illness, getting love and support will help manage any situation better.

Keep in mind that individuals can get to see a therapist just like seeing a primary care physician.  Don’t struggle to get mental wellness on your own.

Check out the episode - Our Mental Wellness on the Real Chicks Rock YouTube channel and reach out to these ladies or other mental health professionals or therapists

The Many Phases of Cancer

The Many Phases of Cancer.

We have the audacity to think that when people have cancer, they should begin to look a certain way. Especially when they have stage 4 cancer. We have a lot of nerve.

Nickole Justice and Deborah Huddleston don’t look sick at all. They are two beautiful women, they are mothers and they are dealing with stage 4 cancer.

Neither one of the women knew that they had cancer. They weren’t feeling well and went to the doctor. For Nickole, they told her that she was too young to have cancer. Therefore, the opportunity to diagnose her cancer early and catch it was missed. Deborah had been running her own business, took care of many and carried on her day to day routine. She too wasn’t feeling well one day and decided to go and get checked out.

You can only imagine that this was life changing for both women. Their jobs. Their careers. Their families impacted. These ladies don’t have time to be scared because they are in a fight for their lives every day.

Healthcare that’s afforded to them is not enough and it’s a constant battle to acquire and maintain coverage.  Their families have stepped in to help provide the support they need. And yet they still fight. They won’t quit. They want to live.

Despite everything that was thrown at them, they were winning until we lost one of them.  On Sunday, June 10, 2018, we lost Nickole Justice to stage 4 cancer. She leaves behind her 10-year daughter nicknamed Nurse Peaches, her parents, family, and friends. It was my honor to meet her and have her and Deborah on RCR! Presents Real Discussions on Sunday, May 20th.   We extend our prayer and condolences to her family and we’re so thankful to have met her.

Thank you Nickole for sharing your battle with us, it will be used to help others.

A Conversation with Stacey DJHotWaxx Hale

The Waxx, The Waxx, And Nothing But The Waxx...

In my recent years, I've come across a few DJs and some leave their mark.  This one is no exception.  DJ Stacey Hotwaxx Hale is a bad girl because she plays as if her life depends on it. This talented DJ and Producer has been involved with music since she was a little girl.  One of the 1st woman to mix and spin on reel to reel in Detroit.

This woman had many 1st and remains just as humble about it all.  Her life story has always involved music.  Detroit is her home and will always be.  In my conversation with Stacey, she shared a lot of stories, experiences, her love for buying vinyl and shouted a lot of people out.

Stacey is not only passionate about music, but she’s also passionate about passing on all that she knows to others.  She’s a teacher, a motivator, a giver and a passionate person.  This lady is one of the kind and will be remembered for all that she's done.

What a night! We’d like to thank everyone that came out to support The Connection- Behind The Groove Event where proceeds went to MS. Every little bit will help to make a big difference.

Gotta Give Thanks For What They See...

What better way to bring in the holidays than to talk with creative beings, that look through their lenses to see everyone’s beauty.  RCR! Presents Real Discussions, our guests were Melissa Alexander, Maurice Thompson and Demetrius Williams – Topic: The Art of Photography.

It was insightful, filled with laughs and infused with next level goals. It was an opportunity to give those who are hardly in front of the camera, to have a voice and talk about the ART of it all.  Their span of work has touched music festivals, events, galas, documentaries, videos, still portraits and action shots.  They have captured people, places and things that resonates with their lenses as a piece of art.  Their visuals contributions have been appreciated as it targets people of color and the beauty that they carry.

We want thank our guests for what they do and their contributions to our communities. Thanks to everyone who listened in, liked, commented and shared the show. Thanks to Instinct Radio for letting us come through for the afternoon.

A Day For Women Entrepreneurs

A Day For Women Entrepreneurs

When women from all walks of life come together to support each other in the area of their business, it becomes a day that will stay with you for quite some time.

A Night Filled with Purple Promises

A Night filled with Purple Promises...

Purple has always been my favorite color and sees it on a sea of empowered women always puts a smile on my face. The date was Saturday, October 14, 2017. The location Columbus, GA Trade and Convention Center. The Event is Purple Promises Domestic Violence Awareness Gala.

Women and men gathered in one place for a night of celebration, newness, and life. Everyone looked beautiful as the pictures were being taken, compliments were given and hugs were exchanged. Twelve (12) women were honored for their commitment to change for themselves by saying no more to enduring a domestic violence situation.

Founder of Powerful Beginnings ~ Monika Thornton was no exception to the rule. As a domestic violence survivor herself, when she made the decision to endure it any longer, she knew she wanted to help others once they made the transition not to go back.

Powerful Beginnings have been doing some impactful things in the Columbus, GA area so when they asked me to be the Mistress of Ceremonies, I couldn't resist. It was a wonderful night and experience for me. Meeting wonderful people, both survivors and supporters made it a night to remember.

Let's Hear It One Time for Da' Funk...

A Conversation with Jason Orr was the topic for this past Sunday on RCR! Presents Real Discussions. Jason has always claimed Atlanta as his home and has seen it continue to grow over the years. Born in Savannah, GA and raised in the A. He was always a creative being and loved it when he was sent to his room so he could continue to create.

In the early years, he was a dancer in group winning talent shows, he learned about lighting, production and the list goes on and on.  His love of music was always there. However, when his mom took him to legendary concerts and shows, that's when his mind was blown.

You'll have to check out the interview to hear how FunkJazz Kafe® was birthed, all the people that Jason gives credit to and where his inspiration came from.  His film FunkJazz Kafe® ~ Diary of a Decade is a critically acclaimed must see so, when it comes to your city, don't miss it. It captures 10 out of the 23 years of the FunkJazz Kafe® era.

Thank you, Jason Orr, for sharing and spending time with us. Thanks to Instinct Radio for letting us break this bread on air.  And thanks to you, you and YOU for listening, liking, sharing and showing support.

Feel free to view all 3 parts of this conversation on my timeline or on the Real Chicks Rock!™ YouTube Channel.

A Conversation with Ken Rye - The Strategy Guy

Copy of RCR! Presents Blog Image.png

RCR! Presents Real Discussions!

Topic: A Conversation with Ken Rye. Aired on September 17, 2017.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please meet Ken Rye ~ The Strategy Guy!

I was fortunate that our schedules aligned and I was able to have A Conversation With Ken Rye on RCR! Presents Real Discussions. This one put me in a humble position because not only was I a fan of his when he was WCLK 91.9 FM here in Atlanta, but he also became my mentor.  His early days at the radio station taught him well as he met some of the most influential artists in the business.  His radio and business partner Ken Beatty also played a significant part in Ken's life. This year reflects 10 years since Ken Beatty has passed, however, his presence and words of wisdom live with Ken today.

Ken has the ability to constantly see talented, skilled individuals and provide strategic suggestions that take their brand to the next level.  He gets it and understands what drives markets, global presence, and brand recognition.

Working for major corporations was his focal point as well as bringing live shows to the Atlanta area.  Ken believes that the connections between an audience, the artist, and the music make it all magical.

Now, Ken Rye and I work together in producing live shows and entertainment under his brand Hot Ice Live.

There's so much to say about this guy from his early days in Detroit, growing up in Chicago and then his Morehouse years in Atlanta. Marketing, Strategic Planning and his love for music all make up the man we know and see working with so many today. He's got history, stories and loads experience to paint the picture of Atlanta, various artists and the world of entertainment.

Go check out the full interview on the Real Chicks Rock!™ YouTube Channel.

Special thanks to Ken Rye for coming by and spending some time with me. Thanks to Instinct Radio for giving us the space and time to have the interview.

Remember to...

~Take every opportunity to build relationships.
~ Leave people with a good experience.
~ Make every step lead you towards becoming legendary.

A Conversation with Lil' Louis

RCR! Presents Real Discussions Special Edition Show

Special Edition of Real Chicks Rock - RCR! Presents Real Discussions Radio Show

Show Air Date: 08/29/2017

Compromising is NOT an option...

It was an insightful, informative and inspiring conversation with what he considers himself as The Founding Father of House, Lil Louis. He's was in Atlanta for his album review and afterparty and came by to talk with me on the Special Edition of RCR! Presents Real Discussions.

The stories, the parties, the music and his love and respect for the his mom and dad were felt throughout the conversation. He started deejaying at an early age and fell in love with how the room came under a place of authority once they heard Kool and The Gang's Jungle Boogie. From that point, he knew that he and music would be connected.

He was an athlete, a straight 'A' student and musician. He was doing a lot at a young age but he felt that's what he needed to do in order to use all the gifts he has. He lives and moves in a space where using all his gifts has a sense of urgency. He will not compromise who he is as an artist and advised the listeners to do the same.

Take a moment to listen to the full interview on Real Chicks Rock! You Tube channel.

Thanks to Lil Louis for taking time out of his busy schedule to come by and share. Shoutout to Instinct Radio for giving me the time and space. Special shoutouts go to WildPitch for making this happen.

A Conversation with Kathleen Bertrand

Some people have the ability to make things look easy, classy and appear seamless with effort. Fortunately, Kathleen Bertrand is one of those people.

As a child, Kathleen knew early on that she loved music and was even more intrigued with all the 'behind the scene' details that are needed to do things right.

Kathleen has had a beautiful career as a singer and songwriter. This didn't happen overnight but has spanned over 30 years as an artist. She has worked with and performed with so many from Roy Ayers to Chaka Khan and more.

When you have someone that has been singing for over 30 years, you must know that travel comes with it. Her beautiful voice and professionalism have taken around the world. Even with that, Atlanta has will continue to be her home.  This talented mother of 4, has no signs of slowing down. In her mind, there's lots of good music the perform, share and give.

A Conversation with N'Dea Davenport

Music is The Key to...LIFE!

I always start off my show by saying "How super excited I am" and this show was no different.

My first guest was so soulfully funky, sassy and intelligent. Her name is N'Dea Davenport. N'Dea was a triple threat early on...singer, dancer, and actress. She never wanted to compromise what her goals and objectives were. She had several opportunities to sing background vocals from Al Jarreau to Madonna. ...singer, dancer, and actress. She never wanted to compromise what her goals and objectives were. She had several opportunities to sing background vocals from Al Jarreau to Madonna.

N'Dea knew what she needed to do and was willing to take the risks. She stuck with her goals and dreams from Atlanta to California to Europe. Been signed on a record label early on, she met this amazing group of guys that formed The Brand New Heavies. Their chemistry mixed well where N'Dea brought the right type of vocals that worked extremely well with the band's sound.
Being a singer/songwriter opened different doors and opportunities for N'Dea as she's worked with several people from Natalie Merchant to Louie Vega. Now, noticing the changes in the industry, she's working on a project that will introduce a vibrant way to listen, dance and interact with music.

Real Chicks Rock!™ RCR Presents Real Discussions

Programs That Work...

On Sunday, May 21, 2017- RCR! Presents Real Discussions ~ Topic: Kids Are People Too. The focus was on Programs Designed To Stimulate Their Minds. Our guests were very insightful regarding our kids today, their patterns, theirs habits and the peer pressure they face on a regular basis.

Our guest Christen Munroe is the founder of VS Alternative which offers kids (boys from ages 12 - 18) a safe space to perform gaming activities.  Remembering what he was like as a kid and the love that he has for his younger brother, helped to birth the concept. Christen is currently in law enforcement and has decided to give back to the community and help young teens stay off the streets.

Our other guest, Valeria Vincent comes with years of experience in teaching and works along side Christen in the program.  She shared with us how teaching has changed from traditional classroom settings to homeshcool to even virtual.  Despite the freedom of not having to physically sit in a classroom, the student and parent still have a huge responsibility in getting the work done.

Gaming is designed to use the old and new concepts to work together. It's teaching young men how to think outside of the box, leadership, team building and a sense of belonging.  Social media will be used to help create positive competition between the players/teams.  This program is designed to have teen boys be present with gaming and take their minds off other distractions that could lead them into trouble.

If you want more information about VS Alternative, gaming and other educational tutoring, contact them at VSAlternatives@gmail.com

We wish VS Alternative all the best, as this program will be embraced by schools, after school programs and organizations, one community at a time.

Until next time, be humble and continue to...#ROCKon

One year Anniversary Episode #46

Topic:  The Ladies Who Sing House - Miranda Nicole

Show Air Date - 4/16/17

How does someone who lives in both California and Atlanta know about house music at a young age?  They typically don't unless they have music around them all the time.  Having a dad that owned a record store that had access to all types of music was ideal.  Miranda started singing when she was young, but being a songwriter was the lane she wanted to reside in.

After a few successfully talent shows, she realized that being a singer felt right.  She listened to various different artists and all types of music.  She really enjoyed listening to CeCe Peniston as one of her favorites but had no idea that she was listening to House Music. Singing this type of genre felt right for her, however, she didn't want to box herself in and limit her style.

Enters in Glamsoul which is a feeling, a sound and a look that Miranda has developed years ago.  When she sings, she wants you to feel it, hear it and see it.

Miranda has a soulful sound that sounds great over the music and becomes even more delicious when remixed.  The world is hers as she continues to write and sing her own music. Keep a close eye on her as she continues to bring you the world the way she sees it through song.

And until next time, always continue to #ROCKon
