What’s Life Like Living with Lupus?

RCR! Presents Blog Image (Living with Lupus Episode).png

Often times we think about Cancer and Diabetes as diseases that impact us the most.  Well, we shouldn’t disregard the power that Lupus has on the individuals it tries to attack.

RCR! Presents Real Discussions talked about What’s Life Like Living with Lupus with two women who refuse to lose.  They are not just survivors, but winners.  My guests Joelle May and Adrienne Allende have decided they would not lose in the daily battle with Lupus.  These ladies have decided to win each new day that they’re given. Yes, it’s like that! It’s a daily decision to want to beat it and not give in to how you might be feeling.

The interesting thing about this is that both of these women were diagnosed with Lupus at different times in their lives not knowing that they had anything wrong with them to begin with.

It has changed them both immensely where some of things that wanted to do and/or used to do can no longer be considered an option. Having children, relationships, careers, etc. are we’re tough decisions that had to made in order to focus on their health each and everyday.

Lupus is a complicated and unpredictable disease. You don’t know when symptoms will strike or how long a flare could last. The uncertainty of how you can be impacted will very from day to day and throughout the course of the day.  To make a donation to the local chapters, go Lupus.org.

Feel free to learn more about Lupus and the women who have decided to fight everyday on the Real Chicks Rock! YouTube channel.

The Power of Small Business

RCR! Presents Blog Image .png

Running and managing anything is never a small feet so when you have to manage a business, you really have your hands full.  As a small business owner myself, I tend to feel the difficulties of managing every and yet still come out in the black. I haven’t mastered that yet but it’s a goal I’ve never lost sight of.

The Power of Small Businesses was the topic as we’ve had some creative, self motivated women entrepreneurs that are clear on how to stay successful in the market place. They both offer unique services and produces which keeps their customers coming back.

Nikki Porcher and Shannon Evans are two vibrant business owners who are making their way here in Atlanta.  Shannon owning an event space and restaurant and Nikki providing Black women an outlet to promote their own business and products. While other women look to buy from them. It’s collaborative economics at it’s best.

Their message to the masses is not to be discouraged about any obstacles but to keep going. They want people to think out of the box, know and believe that it’s possible. Write it down in a business plan and be comfortable in changing/updating it when needed.

For more about their stories, feel free to check the show out on the Real Chicks Rock! Channel on YouTube.

Women in Corporate Management

RCR! Presents Blog Image Ep 61 .png

Some Women Hold All The Cards...

I often times express how I feel about Corporate America, however, these ladies made me see things slightly different. The guests on my show are powerful, strategic, forward-thinking and professional women.  They were the epitome of what well-spoken, articulate professionals should look like. The Topic: Women in Corporate Management on RCR! Presents Real Discussions was insightful as my guests Latoya Parker, Reyna Jones, Lee Ashby Watts and Diana Lee Caplinger talked about their journey from education to current positions.  These women love what they do from a Digital Communications Strategist to Chief Marketing Officer to COO to Senior Leader in Program Management.  Their experiences spanned across several different markets, demographics and corporate cultures.  They have learned to pay attention, stay informed and plan their next move.  It’s been exciting for them, fun and rewarding.  Not one of them would want to change what they’ve had to do to get to the top.  Their advice for the masses…

Be prepared, know what you want and put in the work.

A Conversation with Stacey DJHotWaxx Hale

The Waxx, The Waxx, And Nothing But The Waxx...

In my recent years, I've come across a few DJs and some leave their mark.  This one is no exception.  DJ Stacey Hotwaxx Hale is a bad girl because she plays as if her life depends on it. This talented DJ and Producer has been involved with music since she was a little girl.  One of the 1st woman to mix and spin on reel to reel in Detroit.

This woman had many 1st and remains just as humble about it all.  Her life story has always involved music.  Detroit is her home and will always be.  In my conversation with Stacey, she shared a lot of stories, experiences, her love for buying vinyl and shouted a lot of people out.

Stacey is not only passionate about music, but she’s also passionate about passing on all that she knows to others.  She’s a teacher, a motivator, a giver and a passionate person.  This lady is one of the kind and will be remembered for all that she's done.

What a night! We’d like to thank everyone that came out to support The Connection- Behind The Groove Event where proceeds went to MS. Every little bit will help to make a big difference.

The Art of Photography

Topic: The Art of Photography

Gotta Give Thanks For What They See...

What better way to bring in the holidays than to talk with creative beings, that look through their lenses to see everyone’s beauty.  RCR! Presents Real Discussions, our guests were Melissa Alexander, Maurice Thompson and Demetrius Williams – Topic: The Art of Photography.

It was insightful, filled with laughs and infused with next level goals. It was an opportunity to give those who are hardly in front of the camera, to have a voice and talk about the ART of it all.  Their span of work has touched music festivals, events, galas, documentaries, videos, still portraits and action shots.  They have captured people, places and things that resonates with their lenses as a piece of art.  Their visuals contributions have been appreciated as it targets people of color and the beauty that they carry.

We want thank our guests for what they do and their contributions to our communities. Thanks to everyone who listened in, liked, commented and shared the show. Thanks to Instinct Radio for letting us come through for the afternoon.

A Night Filled with Purple Promises

A Night filled with Purple Promises...

Purple has always been my favorite color and sees it on a sea of empowered women always puts a smile on my face. The date was Saturday, October 14, 2017. The location Columbus, GA Trade and Convention Center. The Event is Purple Promises Domestic Violence Awareness Gala.

Women and men gathered in one place for a night of celebration, newness, and life. Everyone looked beautiful as the pictures were being taken, compliments were given and hugs were exchanged. Twelve (12) women were honored for their commitment to change for themselves by saying no more to enduring a domestic violence situation.

Founder of Powerful Beginnings ~ Monika Thornton was no exception to the rule. As a domestic violence survivor herself, when she made the decision to endure it any longer, she knew she wanted to help others once they made the transition not to go back.

Powerful Beginnings have been doing some impactful things in the Columbus, GA area so when they asked me to be the Mistress of Ceremonies, I couldn't resist. It was a wonderful night and experience for me. Meeting wonderful people, both survivors and supporters made it a night to remember.

Let's Hear It One Time for Da' Funk...

A Conversation with Jason Orr was the topic for this past Sunday on RCR! Presents Real Discussions. Jason has always claimed Atlanta as his home and has seen it continue to grow over the years. Born in Savannah, GA and raised in the A. He was always a creative being and loved it when he was sent to his room so he could continue to create.

In the early years, he was a dancer in group winning talent shows, he learned about lighting, production and the list goes on and on.  His love of music was always there. However, when his mom took him to legendary concerts and shows, that's when his mind was blown.

You'll have to check out the interview to hear how FunkJazz Kafe® was birthed, all the people that Jason gives credit to and where his inspiration came from.  His film FunkJazz Kafe® ~ Diary of a Decade is a critically acclaimed must see so, when it comes to your city, don't miss it. It captures 10 out of the 23 years of the FunkJazz Kafe® era.

Thank you, Jason Orr, for sharing and spending time with us. Thanks to Instinct Radio for letting us break this bread on air.  And thanks to you, you and YOU for listening, liking, sharing and showing support.

Feel free to view all 3 parts of this conversation on my timeline or on the Real Chicks Rock!™ YouTube Channel.

The Power of Giving Back

The Power of Giving Back…

The one thing that is so precious and can’t be given back when lost is time.  So, when thousands of people gather together for a specific cause, then that should duly note.

On September 16th in Atlanta, thousands of us walked together to end Alzheimer’s.  We could not have asked for a better day… the weather, the energy, and the cause were well worth our time and effort.  For the past four years, Real Chicks Rock!™ has joined the Team 'We Walk By Faith' lead by Team Captain Shaun Williams to raise money and awareness against this illness.  Each year continues to exceed the previous year's donations and for that we're thankful.  Mark your calendars for next year, come out and join us as we Walk to End Alzheimers®

We always are relieved when the hurricane season can come and go with no impacts to the islands in the Caribbean.  Unfortunately, this year has not been the case and hurricane season is far from over.  The devastation from Hurricane Harvey, Irma and other hurricanes that are coming behind those have weighed us all down with concern.  There have been several deaths, no power, no clean water and no place to live for thousands.  Here in Atlanta are committed to helping, however, we can.  We’ve collected bags of clothing for the hurricane victims with more on the way.   Every little bit helps so be sure to donate whatever you can when you can. A Conversation with Ken Rye - The Strategy Guy

Copy of RCR! Presents Blog Image.png

RCR! Presents Real Discussions!

Topic: A Conversation with Ken Rye. Aired on September 17, 2017.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please meet Ken Rye ~ The Strategy Guy!

I was fortunate that our schedules aligned and I was able to have A Conversation With Ken Rye on RCR! Presents Real Discussions. This one put me in a humble position because not only was I a fan of his when he was WCLK 91.9 FM here in Atlanta, but he also became my mentor.  His early days at the radio station taught him well as he met some of the most influential artists in the business.  His radio and business partner Ken Beatty also played a significant part in Ken's life. This year reflects 10 years since Ken Beatty has passed, however, his presence and words of wisdom live with Ken today.

Ken has the ability to constantly see talented, skilled individuals and provide strategic suggestions that take their brand to the next level.  He gets it and understands what drives markets, global presence, and brand recognition.

Working for major corporations was his focal point as well as bringing live shows to the Atlanta area.  Ken believes that the connections between an audience, the artist, and the music make it all magical.

Now, Ken Rye and I work together in producing live shows and entertainment under his brand Hot Ice Live.

There's so much to say about this guy from his early days in Detroit, growing up in Chicago and then his Morehouse years in Atlanta. Marketing, Strategic Planning and his love for music all make up the man we know and see working with so many today. He's got history, stories and loads experience to paint the picture of Atlanta, various artists and the world of entertainment.

Go check out the full interview on the Real Chicks Rock!™ YouTube Channel.

Special thanks to Ken Rye for coming by and spending some time with me. Thanks to Instinct Radio for giving us the space and time to have the interview.

Remember to...

~Take every opportunity to build relationships.
~ Leave people with a good experience.
~ Make every step lead you towards becoming legendary.

A Conversation with Kathleen Bertrand

Some people have the ability to make things look easy, classy and appear seamless with effort. Fortunately, Kathleen Bertrand is one of those people.

As a child, Kathleen knew early on that she loved music and was even more intrigued with all the 'behind the scene' details that are needed to do things right.

Kathleen has had a beautiful career as a singer and songwriter. This didn't happen overnight but has spanned over 30 years as an artist. She has worked with and performed with so many from Roy Ayers to Chaka Khan and more.

When you have someone that has been singing for over 30 years, you must know that travel comes with it. Her beautiful voice and professionalism have taken around the world. Even with that, Atlanta has will continue to be her home.  This talented mother of 4, has no signs of slowing down. In her mind, there's lots of good music the perform, share and give.

The Importance of Self Care

RCR! Presents Episode 50

The Importance of Self Care…

It sounds so simple, but yet overlooked.  Often times, we get up and go without taking enough time to ensure that we’re applying the proper self-care for ourselves.  We need to be able to ensure that the necessary steps are taken in order to keep ourselves strengthen on a daily basis.

As people of color, our day to day struggles, opportunities and/or challenges can tend to be different than what other races and cultures might be faced with.  It’s unfortunate, however, very real.  Our thoughts consist of dealing with micro aggression in the workplace, chronic stress and climate changes and challenges within the current society.  We are a resilient people, however, we still need to provide self-care.  It could be as small as eating more vegetables, taking breaks throughout the day to stretch more or going to be early.  These are just a few small, simple and yet significant ones that can be incorporated.

The SisterCARE Alliance is designed to give people (both men and women) the tools needed to begin a self-care regimen and lifestyle.  The majority of the recipients are women, however, men have been on board and supportive as well.  Anana Harris Parris, Founder of Sister Alliance spoke of this vision as she was going through her own discovery in need of self-care.  The self-care guide titled 'Self-Care Matters – A Revolutionary’s Approach' helps individuals address and undercover all areas that are needed.  By taking one step at a time, having someone hold you accountable and seeing your growth from one week to the next is what it’s all about.  The goal is for individuals to adapt to a self-care revolution; owning what they need and being able to identify those critical needs on a daily basis.

For more information about obtaining a self-care revolutionary life, go to www.sisterCareAlliance.org or send an email to sistercarealliance@gmail.com.

The Life of A Visual Artist

The Life of A Visual Artist

The life of a visual artist.

Being an artist is one thing, however, being a very talented and forward thinking artist is something else. To know that you have a gift and present it to the right audience, can also become a challenge.

A visual artist wants the ability not to be boxed in doing what people think they should be or what they should do. They merely have a creative thought and want to express it on anything they can put their hands on canvas, paper, walls and as well as clothing.

Phyllis Robinson knew she was an artist since she was 3 years old. Being a shy person, she looked to art to be an outlet to help in expressing herself. Her work is more reflective of the contemporary side, the revolutionary size, the political side.  Phyllis has since realized that her art has a voice and it must be seen and heard.

Lisa Lee had recently discovered her visual talent side about 8 months ago. She was drawing previously and stopped due to becoming a wife and mother at the time. Now, that her home landscape has changed, she feels that the rediscovery of her skills and love for visual art has come directly from GOD as a second chance at it.

These ladies brought their passion and their sense of humor to RCR! Presents Real Discussions to our show a few weeks back. They shared with us what it's like to have this gift and not necessarily know what to do with it at first. Then, over time and experience, they've learned to accept it and not compromise it.

Attending art shows and gallery's, they've found that they often times are the only females there and/or Black as well. It hasn't stopped them in continuing to pursue what gives them joy. Being a visual artist has not only blessed their souls but also those that have their art on the walls.

Be sure to get some art in your life. Check out PAR.Art LLC and Lisa Lee Artistry and get an original piece of art today.  Art LLC and Lisa Lee Artistry and get an original piece of art today.

We wish them both continued success and remember to...

~ Never let people stop you from doing what you love and what gives you life.
~ Art is a form of expression and when done right, it touches someone's heart and soul.
~ It doesn't matter when or where you start, just start.
